Wega, also Vega, or in the Bayer designation α Lyrae, is the main star of the constellation Lyra. The name is derived from the Arabic expression النسر الواقع, an-nasr al-wāqiʿ, which in translation means “swooping (eagle)”. The star is part of the great summer triangle and in white light the brightest star of the northern sky.
